The Lakefront Trail Experience
There's no better way to experience Milwaukee than riding along Lake Michigan. The lakefront trail segment of the Oak Leaf Trail runs approximately 7 miles from McKinley Marina to South Shore Park, offering continuous lake views, beach access, and some of the city's best people-watching.
Starting Points
Veterans Park is the most popular starting point, with free parking, restrooms, and a bike rental shop. From here, head south toward the Art Museum and downtown skyline.
South Shore Park in Bay View is the southern anchor, with a great beach, beer garden, and food trucks in summer.
What You'll See
- Milwaukee Art Museum with its iconic Calatrava wings
- Bradford Beach — Milwaukee's urban beach with a tiki bar and volleyball courts
- Jones Island and the wastewater treatment plant (more interesting than it sounds)
- South Shore Park beer garden — perfect post-ride refreshment
Best Time to Ride
Sunrise rides are magical — the lake glows orange, the trail is empty, and you'll have Bradford Beach to yourself. Summer weekends after 10 AM get crowded with pedestrians, so ride early or on weekdays. Winter riding is possible but cold; the trail is plowed but lake-effect wind can be fierce.
