What Is the Glacial Drumlin Trail?

The Glacial Drumlin State Trail is a 52-mile rail trail that runs from Waukesha (just west of Milwaukee) to Cottage Grove, near Madison. It's one of Wisconsin's most popular long-distance cycling trails, passing through glacial landscapes, farmland, and small towns.

Access from Milwaukee

The trail's eastern terminus in Waukesha is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee. Park at the trailhead near Frame Park for easy access. From here, you can ride west toward Madison as far as your legs will take you.

Trail Surface and Conditions

The trail has a crushed limestone surface, which is rideable on gravel or road bikes with 32mm+ tires. It's generally well-maintained, but can be soft after rain. The trail is open year-round from 6 AM to dusk, though winter riding requires fat bikes.

Trail Pass Required

Cyclists 16 and older need a Wisconsin State Trail Pass ($5/day, $25/year). Passes are available at self-service stations at trailheads or online through the Wisconsin DNR.

Highlights

  • Gently rolling glacial drumlin landscapes
  • Small towns with food and rest stops every 10-15 miles
  • The section through Lake Mills is particularly scenic
  • Connection to the Capital City Trail in Madison for longer trips
