Mountain Biking Near Milwaukee
While Milwaukee isn't known as a mountain biking destination, there's more off-road riding than you'd expect — both within the city and a short drive away. From beginner-friendly flow trails to technical Kettle Moraine singletrack, here's where to get dirty.
Local Trails
Alpha Trail in Franklin, just south of Milwaukee, is the closest real singletrack. Maintained by volunteers, it offers 5+ miles of flowing trails through woods with some technical features. It's a great after-work ride.
Riverwest 24 hour trails — While not official mountain bike trails, the wooded areas along the Milwaukee River offer informal dirt riding for urban mountain bikers.
Kettle Moraine State Forest
The John Muir Trails in the Southern Unit of Kettle Moraine (about 50 minutes from Milwaukee) are the gold standard for Wisconsin mountain biking. The system offers 10+ miles of singletrack with loops ranging from beginner to advanced. A vehicle admission sticker is required.
The Emma F. Carlin Trail, also in the Southern Unit, offers more challenging terrain with bigger climbs and technical features.
Gear for Milwaukee Mountain Biking
A hardtail mountain bike with 100-120mm travel is sufficient for most Milwaukee-area trails. Full suspension is nice for Kettle Moraine but not required. Bring a hydration pack, tube, and multitool — cell service can be spotty in the Kettles.
Trail Etiquette
Ride on open trails only (trails close after rain). Yield to hikers and horses. Don't skid — it damages trails. And always check trail status online before driving out — conditions change with weather.
